Valentine’s Day, What is Love?

A Valentine’s Day card for my mother.

Valentine's Day | HDIngles.com

A valentine given to my mother in 1911. She was almost 12.

Love is many things but there is only one type of love we celebrate on Valentine’s Day.  Let’s look at the types of love.

Family Love

Not a Valentine’s Day subject.

This is pretty obvious.  You probably love your sister but I doubt you send her a valentine.

Platonic Love

Not a Valentine’s Day subject.

This is love in a different way.  I think of it as deep and trusting friendship.  Think of it as Damon and Pythias.

Puppy Love

Sort of a Valentine’s Day subject.

I say, “Sort of” because it is young love.  The time of life when young ones are learning and experimenting.  A young couple may think they love each other but they don’t quite really understand.  They send valentines and talk sweet talk, but time usually tells and they part.

True, Romantic Love

My wife, Carolyn, and I were married for over 53 years.

This is a Valentine’s Day subject.

It happens every day; a man and a woman meet and there is an attraction.  They get to know and learn about each other.  They find that they get along together.  They discover common likes and dislikes.  They can have conversations together.

There is a point in the relationship where they decide to wed.  The period requires months or even years.  In my case, it was right quick; two months.

My wife, Carolyn, and I were married for over 53 years.
