Student Loan Forgiveness

student loan forgiveness

I make every attempt to keep politics from my website.  The reason I am posting this is because I do not consider our Constitution politics.

I have heard many arguments by those who are for loan forgiveness.

I have heard many arguments by those who are against loan forgiveness.

In neither of the above cases have I heard the Constitution mentioned.

I am not a lawyer and never wanted to be a lawyer, but I have read the Constitution.

The members of all three branches of government, Legislative, Executive, and Judicial, swear to protect and defend the Constitution.

I have a feeling that many of those people don’t know or care about the Constitution.  I even wonder how many have bothered to read it.

In other words, before one goes off on a half-cocked argument, it might not be a bad idea to read the Constitution.

Why do I say That?

United States Constitution, Article I, Section 9:

“… No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law …”

That is not a convoluted phrase.  Unless one is an idiot, I don’t believe one need be a lawyer to understand those words.  As a matter of fact, anyone should be able to understand those words if he is fluent in English.

What does that mean?

It means that the only branch of government which is allowed to spend United States Treasury money is the Legislature by passing a law.  In other words, the Legislative Branch holds the purse strings.

It means that the President of the United States is not allowed to spend United States Treasury money just because he thinks it a good idea or may get him reelected.  In other words, he just isn’t allowed to do it.
