Port Hudson, Louisiana is located on the Mississippi River approximately 25 miles north of Baton Rouge.

An Easy Victory

In May 1863, Union Major General Nathaniel F. Banks moved his Union Army eastward toward the Mississippi River. The goal being the capture of Port Hudson, Louisiana.

Union General Banks looked forward to an easy victory over Major General Franklin Gardner’s Confederate forces at Port Hudson.
