The Art of Measuring: Measuring is an art and not a science. Well, that’s the way I look at it, especially when measuring a drink of hooch.
I, almost invariably, have my evening drink from one of a set of the same glasses. Okay, okay, evening drinks.
I pour myself a double every evening. Well, maybe two. Maybe three. Four, tops.
Anyway, one day recently, for some strange reason, I began to wonder if I were really pouring a double. I never really measured, I just poured some of the stuff into my glass and guessed. That’s where the art comes into play.
I became quite bothered. Was I really pouring a double? I wondered if, for all of these years, I had been shorting myself and not getting the true double which I deserved.
Being a man of action, I decided to test my measuring skills. Well, if you must know, I was bored one afternoon.
Anyway, I found a measuring cup. I had to find it because I never use the thing. What that means is that I have expanded the art of measuring into what small amount of cooking I do.
I put two ounces of water into the measuring cup and then poured the water into one of my drinking glasses.
I discovered that, for years, I have not been pouring a double.
For many years, I just assumed that a bottle of bourbon, after being opened, had a tendency to evaporate. Well, that’s not the case. I have been pouring a quadruple.
