5 Things I Learned Being a Parent

I have learned a thing or two in my 81 years on Earth.

This article is about what I learned after I was faced with raising children.

Things I Learned Being a Parent

Here we go.

1. Stepchildren: It happens. The reason this is first on my list is because it happened to me. My wife, Carolyn, married young and then divorced with a daughter. Carolyn was 21 when I married her and her two and a half year old daughter, Lisa. Now, I can’t tell people how to live and how to think but what my wife and I did worked. I never considered Lisa my stepdaughter. From the start, she was my daughter. She still is.

2. Friends with your children: My two daughters are my friends. But that wasn’t the case when they were growing up. Carolyn and I were their parents. The girls heard the word, “no” many times.

3. Your children’s friends: Teach your children to be a bit cautious when they choose friends.

4. Values: Teach your children the real values of life. Don’t cheat. Don’t steal. Make every effort to keep a promise. Treat others with respect. You know what I’m talking about.

5. Punishment: Make the punishment fit the crime. I am not a big believer in constant spankings. But, when they are very young, that is all they really understand. Truth is, a little spanking hurts their feelings more than it hurts their bottoms. When they are older, stand them up against the refrigerator and talk and talk and talk. It drives them crazy. They hate it. It is almost unbearable. I learned that one from my father.

Raising children to become good adults is sort of a hard job.  Same with you?
