The Waitress
The story begins in 1946, when Betty Sue Powers is a 23-year-old waitress in Huntington, West Virginia. Betty is not only a stunningly gorgeous woman, she is intelligent, honest, and hardworking. Betty is frequently asked out by men but she always refuses.
The only bright spot in Betty’s dull existence is a wealthy businessman, Jim Thompson. Jim is sixty-seven years old and married. He treats Betty well and there is never a hint of impropriety. Over a period of time, Jim becomes Betty’s only true friend.
The scene then flashes back to Huntington in 1929, when Betty is six years old, and Betty’s story begins.
Betty is a well-treated little girl. Betty’s father, Russell Powers, is a master carpenter and earns a bit more money than the average working-class family.
The Great Depression has a devastating effect on the Powers family. The Depression put Betty’s father, Russell, over the brink and Russell almost destroys his family with his drinking.
In 1934, Russell realizes what he is doing. He snaps out of his drinking problem and recovers well. Before the end of the decade, Russell’s family have more money than they could ever imagine. It is a happy family.
Betty made a major mistake when she was 18, and feels she will pay for it for the rest of her life.
Just before the outbreak of World War II, Betty meets an extremely wealthy ne’er-do-well who tricks Betty. After only a few short months of happiness, Betty’s life evolves into Hell. Betty recovers but she is sure her life is ruined.
When she is 25, Betty meets a wounded ex-Army colonel who changes her life in wonderful ways which she never dreamed possible.
