The First Catholic To Run For President

Ever heard of Al Smith?

And I’m not talking about the guy who lives down the block.

I’m talking about the man who was Governor of New York from 1919-1920 and 1923-1928.

Al Smith was the Democrat Party’s nominee for President in 1928.

STOP for a minute because I need to tell you something. I am NOT Catholic.

Al Smith was Catholic, the first Catholic to run for President, and he lost the election.

The next Catholic to make a try for the presidency was John F. Kennedy (JFK). He was also a Democrat.

There were cries that, if we elected JFK, the Pope would run the United States.

Then, of course, there were screams of bigotry.

But Americans were reminded of the Constitution of the United States, Article VI: “… The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” — Our Founding Fathers were far ahead of their time.

I was born and raised not only a Democrat but a Baptist and I voted for JFK. That was my first time to vote; I was 21 in 1960.

JFK was Catholic and he won the election.

What am I telling you? I am telling you to think about our Country and our Constitution. (“… no religious Test shall ever be required …”)

I am also telling you that many United States Senators are breaking their oaths to support the Constitution.
