A Romantic Memory

Flash Fiction: A man’s memories of young love.

A Romantic Memory by H.D. Ingles

Jim began thinking about a happier time and the sweetness of young love.

Jim thought of Mary Jane.  It was a long time ago.

Mary Jane was a beautiful girl and the prettiest girl in school.  Jim had been secretly in love with Mary Jane for a year but he was afraid to ask such a popular girl out.

One day, Jim finally mustered up the courage to ask Mary Jane to go to a movie with him on Friday evening.  He couldn’t quite believe it when she said, “Yes.”

Jim learned nothing at school for the entire day on Friday.  All he could think about was Mary Jane.

At the movie, Jim placed his arm on the seat back of Mary Jane’s seat.  He was again surprised when she took his hand and pulled it down to her shoulder.

At Mary Jane’s doorstep, Jim wanted to kiss the pretty girl but he didn’t want to anger her.  She told him that she enjoyed the evening and then told him that she had been wanting Jim to ask her out for months.

Jim was emboldened and asked for a Saturday date and she immediately responded, “Yes.”

At the movie on Saturday, the two snuggled.

Before Jim left Mary Jane that evening, he kissed her.

They were young and it was the first real kiss he had ever experienced.

Sitting in the chair, Jim smiled and remembered that first kiss.  Mary Jane’s soft lips pressing against his that first time was something he could never forget.

Suddenly, Jim was brought back to reality when he heard a switch being pulled.

Electricity coursed through Jim’s body.

Jim had murdered a man and Jim had to die.
