You know, some things seem unfair. That comes in two categories:
Category 1: It really is unfair.
For example, if a teacher favors student A over student B, and student B makes better grades and is a much better student but the teacher just likes student A and doesn’t like student B, that is unfair.
Category 2: It’s not unfair, it’s just circumstances.
You’ve seen it before, it’s just the way things turn out. The rest of this little blurb explains what I am talking about.
The example I am going to give you is about something which happened in 1939.
Now, hold on a minute. I am not saying that it’s unfair to all of those other poor slobs who were born in 1939 that I was born in 1939.
I am talking about movies.
I believe that all movie experts have said that 1939 was a stellar year for movies. The stellar year. To this day, no other year has ever produced more great movies than 1939.
Why do I say that? Think about it. “The Wizard of OZ”, “Stagecoach”, “Goodbye Mr. Chips”, “The Women”, “Young Mr. Lincoln”, ”Ninotchka”, … The list goes on.
It Was Just One of Those Years
Take a couple of hours and watch “The Wizard of OZ” and you will say to yourself, “How in the heck did that movie not win an Oscar?”
Well, the answer is very simple: “Gone With the Wind”
I don’t believe there was a master plan or any plot. It’s a bit like the old song, “Just One of Those Things” (Frank Sinatra).
In 1939, great movies were like grapes and the great ones came in a bunch.
You see, that’s just the way life works sometimes.
